Fall in Phoenix is the season everybody waits for. The mornings finally drop below 80, the trails reopen in our heads, and weekends fill with patio brunches, ballgames and drives up the I-17. The one thing that doesn't change is the sun. Even in October it's strong enough to turn a fun day into a long one if you leave home unprepared.
Here is the short kit we keep packed, built around things that live in our Go Zone and Gadget Zone.
1. Shade for your eyes
A spare pair of aviator sunglasses in the glove box solves the "left them on the counter" problem forever. Glare off windshields and pale desert rock is real, and a second pair costs less than a parking ticket.
2. A car kit you never think about
An emergency car kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, a basic first aid pouch and a reflective triangle covers most roadside surprises. Store it in the trunk and check it twice a year, when the clocks change everywhere else.
3. Air for the tires
Heat changes tire pressure quickly. A portable tire inflator plugs into the car, reads the pressure and stops automatically, so a slow leak doesn't end the trip at a gas station with a broken air pump.
4. Comfortable shoes for unplanned walking
Lightweight barefoot-style shoes pack flat and save your feet when a quick stop turns into a two-mile wander through Old Town.
5. A small clean-up tool
Dust finds its way into every car here. A mini car vacuum clears the floor mats in five minutes before you head home.
Put all of that together once, and the next spontaneous day out starts with keys and a water bottle, nothing more.
